Jesus made his first public speaking appearance on the side of a hill in Matthew 5.1-9Matt 5.1 - And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. KJV. The subject of his sermon was the "blessed are the" or the "blessed are they", which means happy and prosperous are the ones who have these attitudes or characteristics in their lives. He spoke of things in the hearts of people like the poor in spirit, grieving, the meek and the merciful - all things that the world would call weaknesses. But Jesus said that these things weren't weaknesses at all, they were strength of character in a person.
It's paradoxical when you really think about it; what the world would call weak, unfortunate or unsuccessful; God calls strong, fortunate and a success to achieve. But then again, the true Christian is not part of this world - we are just passing through and we are different than the worldly bunch. Most people see meekness as something that is weak and can be taken advantage of, and this could be true; but Jesus saw meekness as a strength of character that God approves of in his people. Most people see one who is low in spirit as one that can be pushed around; but God sees this as a characteristic that is worthy of a reward in heaven.
The world tells it's children, don't take anything off
anybody, take what you want, be ambitious, it's only wrong if your caught, it's all about you and what you want - be the lion1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: KJV and make your way through life. But Jesus tells his children, be meek, be humble and patient, be righteous, be merciful and compassionate, think about others as well as yourself - all the things that really make life worth living. So you can see, my dear friends, what the world will teach you and instruct you to be like, will only earn you a place in hell. What the world will teach you is to be like a wolf who is only concerned with filling it's own belly, doesn't matter who gets hurt. What the world will teach you, will in time, destroy you; but what Jesus teaches us, will give us a good, full life here and an eternity in heaven with reward. The choice is up to each of us which roadMatthew 7:13-14 - Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. KJV we go down.
