When the great king David committed sin with Bathsheba; that act erased the fellowship and closeness he had with his God. In Psalm 51, we can see his brokenness, his shame, and his prayer for reconciliation with his Lord. One of the most important things to him, he asks God to restore is his joyPsalm 51:12 - Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. KJV. When he transgressed against the Lord with his sin of the flesh, his close relationship with God was gone and with it, went the joy in his heart.
For the Christian, that joy that we read about in Psalm 51:12Psa 51:12 - Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. KJV is one of the most important parts of their spirituality. That joy is a source of their hope, it makes their testimony much stronger and it helps to give them confidence in thier relationship with Jesus Christ. Another thing we can learn from that single verse of scripture is that sin and disobedience hinder the joy in the life of the Christians. The Christians joy flows from God, without that relationship between the Christian and God on good terms, there is no joy to be had -- no fellowship and closeness = no joy.
There seems to be a lot of joyless Christians now- -days which only makes you wonder - why ? Was it that God just decided one day to take it away; or was it because the Christian decided to slide back into the world ?
Well... we know that God does not slide back on his end of the bargain, what about you ? When we find ourselves without joy in our life - it may be time to take stock of our lives, and look a little closer at the life we are living. Is it one that God can have fellowship with; or is it not ?
