The most popular party - the pitty party

Everybody likes a good party every now and then - there are birthday parties, superbowl parties, turning 40 parties and the list goes on and on. There is a party for almost everything, but the party that is most often thrown is probably the "pity party"; or as the drama queen pity partysomeone has more eloquently put it - sitting on the pity potty. That is that time when a person just gets to sit around and think about how bad they have really got it, how unfair life really is to them and how little hope they really have; don't laugh - you have, in all likelyhood, had your own within the last 6 or 8 months!

As much fun as it may seem to sit on the pitty potty with our face buried in our hands; thinking about how bad we've got it - it can only make matters worse. Self pity makes people feel more alone, more withdrawn, more depressed and more isolated. There is only one cure for the sickness of self pity and that is; realizing that it can always be worse, understanding that we are not the only one in the world. No matter how bad it gets, someone, somewhere in the world has always got it worse than any one of us.

I have found a cure that will help pity parties tremendously - if a pity party is focusing on self, then a selfless act will help to counter it. The Bible tells us in Galatians 6:2Gal 6:2 - Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.  KJV that if we will help others to bear their own burdens, we will fulfill the law of Christ. Not only will helping others in their time of need make us a saint - it will help us get our eyes off our own self and situation (the things that cause us to have pity parties). When a person truly realize that other people may just have it worse than they do; and then try to help them - they just won't have time to sit on the pity potty for very long. They'll  be too busy thinking about others and just won't have time to sit around thinking about how bad things are for them.
