The holier than thou attitude

We have all; in life came across that person, or persons who have the "holier than thou attitude". At some time in our life we are going to come in contact with "Sister Christian" or "Brother Perfection" and find out that we just aren't quite up to par in our own lives. These are people who are quick to point out every shortcoming of other people - you know the kind, they point out every flaw in others, but never really look at themselves as flawed. Jesus has got a message for people like this, judge notMatthew 7:1 - Judge not, that ye be not judged.  KJV !

If those who have this type of attitude would look a little closer at God's Word, they would find out that the Bible does not condone this type of attitude. Much to the contrary, the Bible instructs us to be humble instead of haughty. A closer examination of the Word of God will show that we are all sinnersIsaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  KJV, there are none who is really able to look down their long old noses at exalt selfany one else. God tells us to esteem others better than ourselvesPhilippians 2:3 - Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.   KJV. The holier than thou attitude definitely does not esteem others better than our own self - much to the contrary - it's an attempt to raise ones own self above others. Which brings me to another verse in Matthew 23:12Mat 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.   KJV, who ever humbles themselves will be exalted, but whoever tries to put themselves above others will be brought down. That is the wrong attitude to have as a Christian, loving others, accepting others as what they really are (sinners), and trying to help them, is the right attitude.

The holier than thou attitude is one of the most offensive attitudes a person can have, and it certainly won't help many people. The Christians goal is to be able to help people - absolutely impossible when talking down to everyone. If you have this type of attitude, it may be time to repent and believe the gospelMark 1:15 - And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.  KJV.
